Chapter 15

“This is useless”, Colonel Jen-Nin Vel Tan said, rubbing at his temples. The screams of the captive Mok-Talek was interrogating were giving him a headache.

The human was soft and small, and Vel Tan had doubts about Mok-Talek’s claim that the man was actually part of the resistance. He certainly wasn’t reticent to speak. He’d been babbling nonstop since the moment Mok-Talek had first applied the stun wand to him, set to low power. The little man was strapped to what had once been a barber’s chair, according to the Intelligence officer. The whole idea of sitting in such an oversized, padded monstrosity merely to have one’s hair cut sounded ridiculous to Vel Tan, but it had proven quite handy for restraining prisoners.

The next occupant wouldn’t enjoy the experience even as much as this one, since the little man had soiled himself quite early in the process. Vel Tan was glad for the two-way mirror separating the observation room from the interrogation chamber, as he found human waste no more aromatic than that of his own people.

Mok-Talek paused in his administration of electric shock and looked up at the mirror at his superior officer’s words.

“I will yet break him, sir,” he promised, then cursed as the translator automatically shifted the words to the human language. He smacked his palm into the control and tried again. “He is close, sir, I feel it.”

“You feel it?” Vel Tan mocked, leaning into the mirror as if the male could see him. “How many times have you interrogated a human, Mok-Talek? Unless I miss my count, this is your second. Tell me how you obtained a feel for this in the last three days?”

The Intelligence officer dithered, but Vel Tan cut it off.

“He knows people you think are involved with the insurgency,” the colonel growled. “Nothing you’ve managed to extract from him indicates he has any useful information. I told you I wanted members of this group captured and questioned. If you’ve failed me, Mok-Talek, I would remind you that you are not the only officer who can do this job, nor are you immune from the price of dishonor simply because your grandfather served with the Emperor.”

“Give me a few minutes,” Mok-Talek pled. He held up a hand, then switched the translator back on and turned to the prisoner. “You are called Bran Severn. Is this true?”

“Yes, yes, that’s my name,” the human blathered, spittle flying from his mouth. “I’m Bran Severn! What do you want from me? I don’t know anything about the resistance! I’m just a shipping clerk. I handle cargo coming in from the settlements! I haven’t done anything since you guys came except load trucks!”

Mok-Talek grabbed the stun wand off the table and held the trigger down, an arc of electricity passing between the leads only centimeters from the human’s face.

“You know other humans who are involved. You should tell me their names before I am forced to cause you more pain.”

“Look, I don’t know! I mean, there are
